Demolition and Excavation Services in Penrith
Penrith is defined by space. Larger blocks, lifestyle properties built across the 1980s and 1990s, and a growing number of homes approaching the end of their useful life create a demolition market that looks very different from inner Sydney. Add the Western Sydney Aerotropolis reshaping the eastern edge of Penrith LGA, and you have one of the most active demolition corridors in Greater Sydney.
Pool removal is one of the most common requests we receive from Penrith – thousands of in-ground concrete pools installed on lifestyle properties in the 1980s and 90s are now unused, expensive to maintain, and increasingly difficult to sell around. Acreage site clearing, rock excavation, and residential knockdown-rebuild round out a market that has its own distinct character.
Get It Away operates from our Smithfield office and reaches Penrith via the M7 – our teams are on site in St Marys, Kingswood, Emu Plains, and Penrith CBD efficiently and without cross-city delays. We hold a SafeWork NSW Restricted Demolition Licence (DE2 – AD214489) and have been delivering demolition and excavation across Penrith City for more than 25 years.
Pool Removal in Penrith – Full Removal or Backfill?
Pool removal is one of the most requested services across Penrith City. Lifestyle properties built in the 1980s and 1990s across Kingswood, Emu Plains, Jamisontown, Cambridge Park, and St Clair were routinely built with in-ground concrete pools. Many of these pools are now 30 to 40 years old, no longer in regular use, and generating ongoing costs in maintenance, chemicals, heating, and safety compliance.
There are two ways to remove a pool. The right choice depends on what you plan to do with the space, whether you intend to sell the property, and what Penrith City Council requires in your specific situation. We explain both options clearly before any work begins.
Full pool removal
The entire pool structure – shell, coping, beam, plumbing, and associated paving – is broken up, removed from site, and the void is backfilled and compacted to engineering specification. Drainage provision is installed to prevent subsurface water accumulation.
Full Council certification available
No disclosure obligation on property sale
Can build over the area without restriction
Higher cost than partial demolition
Best for: property sales, building extensions, full backyard reinstatement
Partial demolition and backfill
The pool shell is broken up to a depth below the surface, holes are punched through the base for drainage, and the void is filled and compacted with suitable material. The area is grassed or paved over. Less expensive than full removal.
Lower cost than full removal
Suitable for lawn reinstatement
Disclosure required when selling
Cannot build over the area
Best for: lawn reinstatement only, where sale is not imminent
Penrith City Council pool deregistration
All pools in NSW are required to be registered with the NSW Swimming Pool Register. When a pool is removed, the registration must be cancelled via Penrith City Council. We advise on the deregistration process and the documentation required to complete it correctly as part of our pool removal scope.
Rock Excavation in Penrith
Penrith sits at the base of the Blue Mountains escarpment. Sandstone and hardrock are encountered at varying depths across the LGA – particularly on elevated ground in Emu Plains, Penrith itself, and the western fringe suburbs. Rock changes everything about how excavation is planned and priced.
Why rock matters
Standard excavator buckets cannot dig sandstone or hardrock. Rock breaking equipment – hydraulic hammers and in some cases rock saws – is required. This adds time and cost that must be factored into any accurate quote. We assess rock likelihood during the site inspection.
Pool and basement excavation
Excavating for a new pool or basement garage on a Penrith block is one of the most common scopes where rock is encountered unexpectedly. We carry rock-breaking equipment on relevant Penrith jobs and do not issue variation claims for rock that was a foreseeable site condition.
Spoil removal
Broken rock and excavated material must be removed from site and disposed of at licensed facilities. Our fixed quotes include spoil removal – there are no surprises when the tipper trucks arrive. All spoil is disposed of in compliance with NSW EPA requirements.
Other Demolition and Excavation Services in Penrith
Residential demolition and KDR
Full house demolition for knockdown-rebuild and dual-occupancy development. Asbestos identification and licensed removal, utility disconnection coordination, structural demolition, footing and slab removal, and level site handover. Most active across St Marys, Kingswood, Cambridge Park, and Werrington.
Acreage site clearing
Larger rural-residential properties in Penrith LGA commonly require clearance of multiple structures before a new build – sheds, stables, water tanks, old dwellings, and fencing. We plan and execute full property clearances including vegetation clearing where this forms part of the scope.
Aerotropolis precinct clearance
The Western Sydney Aerotropolis is reshaping the eastern edge of Penrith LGA. Older rural structures, dwellings, and agricultural buildings on release land in Orchard Hills, St Marys, and Ropes Crossing are being cleared ahead of subdivision and development. We deliver compliant demolition and site clearing to program requirements.
Service trenching and excavation
Trenching for sewer, stormwater, power, and gas services across residential and commercial sites. Building platform formation, retaining wall preparation, and site levelling. Rock-breaking capability on-hand for sites where subsurface rock is encountered.
Penrith City Council – Permits and Compliance
Demolition and pool removal across Penrith City requires council approval. The specific pathway depends on the type of work and whether the property is within a heritage or environmental constraint area.
Demolition applications
Standard residential demolitions proceed via a Complying Development Certificate through a private certifier. Properties near the Blue Mountains escarpment, within environmental constraint areas, or adjacent to watercourses may require a full DA with Penrith City Council. We advise on the correct pathway during your free site assessment.
Pool removal requirements
Pool removal in Penrith City generally does not require a separate development application for the removal itself – however, if you are backfilling and reinstating, drainage and compaction must comply with Penrith City Council standards. Full removal requires a deregistration notice to be lodged with the NSW Swimming Pool Register via Council.
SafeWork NSW notification
Required 5 business days before demolition involving asbestos above 10m2. We lodge this on your behalf.
Utility disconnections
Endeavour Energy, APA Gas, and Sydney Water all require formal disconnection before demolition. We coordinate all three.
BASIX implications
Removing a pool can affect BASIX water commitments on new builds. We flag this where relevant during the project planning stage.
Project Insight
Pool Removal and Site Reinstatement – Emu Plains
A lifestyle property in Emu Plains with a 1980s in-ground concrete pool was referred to us by the owner ahead of a property sale. The pool had not been used in over a decade, compliance with current pool barrier regulations would have required significant expenditure, and the owner wanted full removal with certification to avoid disclosure obligations.
Rock was encountered during initial excavation at approximately 600mm depth – consistent with the Blue Mountains escarpment geology in this area. We managed the rock breaking as part of the fixed scope, and the pool shell, coping, and plumbing were fully removed from site.
The void was backfilled in compacted layers to engineering specification, drainage provision was installed, and the area was top-soiled and handed over ready for turf laying. Penrith City Council pool deregistration paperwork was completed as part of our scope.
Scope: Full pool removal + rock breaking + backfill and compaction + deregistration | Location: Emu Plains, Penrith City
