Heritage Partial Demolition & Asbestos Removal in Marrickville
Marrickville combines Victorian terraces, older industrial buildings and established residential streets around precincts such as Addison Road. Tight sites, heritage considerations and difficult access can all affect how demolition work is planned, particularly where terraces share walls or sit within conservation areas. Every project starts with a close look at heritage status and site access before demolition can proceed.
Get It Away operates from our Lidcombe office, a short drive from Marrickville. We hold a SafeWork NSW Demolition Licence, AD214489, and regularly manage heritage partial demolition, house demolition, and industrial heritage removal across Marrickville and the wider Inner West.

Marrickville’s Housing Stock
Marrickville has extensive Victorian era terrace housing, alongside older industrial buildings and later infill and alterations. Heritage conservation areas around Marrickville Street and Railway Street cover a large share of the suburb. Properties within a conservation area or affected by heritage controls may require additional heritage assessment before demolition or alteration work.
1880s to 1920s
Victorian terraces and cottages with original facades, particularly across established Marrickville residential areas.
Early to mid 1900s
Factories and warehouses tied to Marrickville’s manufacturing history, now part of the industrial heritage precinct. Former industrial use means contamination is checked before ground works.
Post war infill
Limited infill and rear extensions on established terrace blocks.

Asbestos removal
Homes and outbuildings built before the late 1980s may contain asbestos in areas such as eave linings, wet area sheeting or older structures. A proper assessment identifies where asbestos is present before demolition begins.
Inner West Council: Permits and Compliance
Marrickville falls under Inner West Council. The approval pathway depends on the property’s heritage status, conservation area controls, proposed works and other applicable planning requirements. A Development Application may be required for demolition where the relevant controls apply.
Where a heritage impact statement is required, it forms part of the planning documentation for the proposed works, assessing how the works affect the property and the surrounding streetscape.
Planning and Site Requirements to Check
✓ Heritage documentation where required
✓ Asbestos assessment where required
✓ Structural documentation for shared or affected walls where required
✓ Neighbour notification or consultation where applicable
Working Around Marrickville’s Streets and Neighbours
Marrickville Road runs one way and Parramatta Road creates regular bottlenecks nearby, so access planning happens before a single truck arrives. Some terrace streets have limited parking and restricted rear access, which can shape how equipment, skips and material removal are staged.
Shared party walls make vibration, dust and structural protection important considerations during terrace demolition. We brace and monitor the shared wall throughout the works and keep neighbours informed before work starts.
Project Insight
Heritage Partial Demolition, Marrickville Street Precinct
A Victorian terrace within the Marrickville Street conservation area was referred to us ahead of a rear extension and internal renovation. The owner wanted to keep the original facade, hallway, and front rooms while removing a deteriorated rear addition that postdated the 1890s structure.
We coordinated the heritage impact statement with the owner’s architect, arranged an asbestos assessment that identified ACMs in the rear addition’s wall sheeting, and lodged the DA with council. Licensed removal was completed before structural work began, with the party wall braced and monitored throughout.
The rear section was removed by hand close to the boundary, protecting the neighbouring terrace and the original front of the home. The site was handed over ready for the renovation build to start.
Scope: heritage impact statement coordination, asbestos removal, partial demolition | Location: Marrickville Street conservation precinct
