The nail heads often sit slightly proud of the sheet surface and were punched in rather than countersunk, because countersinking would split the brittle material. Joins between sheets were usually covered with timber D-mould strips or flat battens.
This is a clue, not a confirmation. Early asbestos-free fibre cement products used the same fixing method. The presence of clout nails and D-mould tells you the product is older; it does not tell you what the fibre is.
2. Surface Texture and Appearance
Asbestos cement sheet often has a slightly chalky, smooth surface, sometimes described as having a matte, dusty quality when weathered. Some products have a dimpled or “golf ball” texture on one face. Modern fibre cement tends to have a more uniform factory finish and may have a textured grain pressed into the surface to simulate timber or render.
A product like Hardiflex, one of the most common internal lining sheets, was manufactured in both asbestos and asbestos-free versions. The surface looks almost identical between the two eras.

The key problem: both materials contain fibres locked into a cement matrix. The fibre in asbestos cement is chrysotile (white asbestos). The fibre in modern fibre cement is cellulose or synthetic. You cannot distinguish them by eye. You are essentially trying to identify one type of microscopic fibre versus another.
This is a clue, not a confirmation. And there is an additional reason to be cautious: if the edge is already exposed and breaking down, the material is already disturbed. Do not handle broken sheet edges or attempt to get a better look by flexing or snapping the material.
